Dave's Demo Of Wordland

Dave has posted a quick demo of the latest iteration of development on Wordland in which he shows how RSS feed and blog posting works. It looks interesting, but what I am most curious about is how one can create a blog post from an RSS item.

What I mean is, as I am reading a feed if I find an item that I want to write my own blog post about I would like to do that right in Wordland.

A new version of Feedland has been released. The upgrade seems straight forward but right now I don't understand the benefit. Supposed to be some integration with Wordland but I don't understand it.

I don't understand linkblogs that don't have links. To me, what Dave currently has is a linksfeed but not a linkblog. A blog is a web page and for it to be useful it needs links.

Dave says that the linkblog feature of Wordland is not designed to include the link of a source article in the post it published to Wordpress. No idea how he is doing it then. I guess he is referring to the July 3 entry of the release notes. I don't see how a linkblog is one without links to sources, though I get this is all about the feed.

I can just hit enter and paste the source link to the edit box.

A new version of Wordland has been released that should fully support linkblogs, but there are a full bugs for which I have provided bug reports. To test this I have created a new Wordpress site just to be my linkblog, available here.

I wonder whether I can now configure Feedland to be it's linkblog. Do I have to put in the entire source of the bookmarklet?

I have looked at the Edit feed Cnames and I don't think it is literally the same as a DNS Cname. A DNS Cname can only mapped to a alternate domain not a page.

Dave has released his new linkblog feed that he manages using Wordland. There seems to be little dependency on Wordpress. I see there is a guid entry for every item in the feed and the guid value is a URL to a Wordpress page that has the text of the link title but itself is not a link. The Wordpress site is just a list of the link titles that themselves are not links, so I don't see the point. I get that the linkblog is just a feed but then why use a Wordpress site for the guid that can be any unique string?

Note to self... the last site you publish a post to is at the of the list, it's not a default like you previously thought.

When uploading and then pasting an image in Wordland you need to edit the tag to specify a width and height using an external app before pasting because way to switch the editor to HTML mode. Weird, seems like now that I added the width and height values the URL remains in the editor rather than the picture.

A new version of Wordland has been released but it doesn't yet have the full linkblog support. I see an option in the Tools menu called Edit feed Cnames that might be related.

Looks like Dave is getting closer to releasing the linkblogging capability of Wordland. I wonder whether that will work with Feedland? I am thinking that I may create a new Wordpress site for hosting a linkblog.

While I don't mind a separate linkblog tool, for me the best tool for generating a linkblog would be Readwise Reader.

I thought I would check in on Wordland to see if there is anything obviously new. I am curious about the linkblogging component Dave appears to have in the works. Is Dave creating a different RSS feed for the linkblog or is it the same feed as generated by Wordland?

One aspect of Wordland that I am uncomfortable with is that the RSS feed that Wordland generates is hosted on Dave's server. It would be better to provide a way for users to selfhost Wordland or at least the RSS feed.

What if I did this "old school" and created a post per day with random stuff, which is how I use my day notes? The upside is that I would get off Dave's hosting for my day notes. The downside is I would have to use a different editor (Wordland) rather than Drummer, which is very ironic!

I found where I can edit categories, so I created the Daynotes category and added it to this post.

What if there was a way for a user to define a template for a new post? For example, it could be nice that when I click to add a new post the title would be pre-populated with the current date after checking to be sure I didn't already create a post with that title.

I've written a note about how I use Drummer and this dabble with Wordland.

One big difference between the daily notes written in Drummer and published/hosted by OldSchool is that every paragraph/post has link whereas that is note the case here. Compare this with this.

Wordland Bookmarks

I have enabled Bookmarks in Wordland and I see that they are more robust than the Bookmarks in Drummer. I wonder, does a bookmark get automatically created for every post? Looks like Wordland is pre-populating some bookmarks in a calendar structure.

New Wordland Feature

Just checking out a new version of Wordland that displays the posts that I write in it in reverse chronological order. I see that I have to do a browser refresh in order to see new posts appear in the timeline.

Turned off this setting... I know to select a site. Perhaps that resolves the status issue I've been seeing. Yup, that seems to be the case.

Spinning Wheel

When publishing the previous post the status "wheel" appeared and kept spinning. I wonder whether that is a one time occurrence or continual? Still there on a new post. Refreshing the browser removes it, so mostly a nuisance. Well, after I made that update the spinning wheel went away after I heard the post "ding." Not sure what is going on, perhaps performance?

Drummer Blog Issue

I had an odd issue with my day notes blog that I manage using Drummer. Somehow the XML format of the OPML file of the blog became mal-formed in that a right square bracket "]" got added at the bottom. The result is that the OPML file would not load in Drummer.

I downloaded my Drummer files to a computer, opened the blog.opml file in Emacs, and corrected the file. Deleted the old file out of Drummer, created a new blog.opml and then imported from a local file. I had to add the header values needed by the Old School blogging engine to get everything back in order.

WordPress Requires Titles

I can create posts without titles in Wordland but those cause problems when published to WordPress because it uses the titles as a link to the post. So, I can see this post from WordLand but not via either the top page or the archive page of the WordPress site.

You can see the category and date of the post but there is no link to it for viewing.

Upon further review, it looks like the use of the title is driven by the site template. The template Dave is using displays the post content on the top page along with the title and uses the date and title as the link to the post.

I like the typography of the template that I am using versus the one Dave is using, so I would like to stick with this template. I wonder if I can make the changes to accommodate the posts without a title?

I am looking at the pictures of the expected iPhone 17 Air and I am thinking to myself, can a phone or tablet be too thin? What immediately comes to mind is the impact to battery life, thinner usually means smaller, less capacity, battery. Another question is, how does it feel to hold?
